Apple added them across the beta cycle rather than all at once: an abstract Golden Gate design in the first beta, then Golden Gate Sunset and Golden Gate Night in beta 3, then Golden Gate Day and Golden Gate Evening in beta 6. You will find them in System Settings → Wallpaper, under Landscape.
They behave the way Apple's aerials have for a couple of releases now: motion when you unlock the Mac, which slows and settles into a still image, and the option to use the same footage as a screen saver. It is genuinely good material and it costs nothing, so it is the right first stop before you install anything. The limits are the familiar ones — Apple's scenes only, no way to add your own video or a link, and no sound.
The lock-screen install change — why some apps broke and others did not
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why coverage of macOS 27 and live wallpapers is contradictory depending on which app the writer uses.
There are two ways an app can put motion on a Mac desktop. It can install a wallpaper into Apple's own system, which is how you get video on the lock screen as well as the desktop — that is the route Backdrop made popular and Wallper followed. Or it can draw its own window at the desktop layer, behind your icons and windows, and play video there — that is how Tayu, ScreenPlay and Plash work, and it is why none of them put anything on the lock screen.
macOS 27 changed the first route. Wallper's own release notes for version 1.9.0 put it plainly: "Apple changed how these wallpapers are installed, and the old way stopped working for everybody." Their fix was to use Apple's wallpaper system directly rather than working around it, which also removed the password prompt and the background process the old method needed. The important word there is everybody — this was not one app's bug.
The second route was not affected by that specific change, because it never touched Apple's wallpaper store in the first place. That is not a guarantee those apps run perfectly on macOS 27 — a major release moves plenty of other ground — but it does mean they were not part of this particular breakage.
Apple Silicon only — macOS 27 drops Intel Macs entirely
macOS 27 is the first release with no Intel support at all, which makes macOS Tahoe the last version that runs on an Intel Mac. If that is your machine, none of the above reaches you: you stay on Tahoe, and the apps you already have keep behaving the way they do today.
For everyone else, the practical effect is a floor rather than a ceiling. Live wallpaper apps have been quietly assuming Apple Silicon for a while — Tayu, for instance, has required macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon since it shipped — and macOS 27 makes that assumption official across the platform.
What to check before you upgrade
Four things, in the order that saves the most time:
- Does your app do lock-screen video? If yes, it went through the install change. Find its release notes and confirm there is a version that mentions macOS 27 before you upgrade.
- Is your Mac Apple Silicon? If it is Intel, you are staying on Tahoe and none of this applies.
- Do you actually need the app? If all you wanted was gentle motion, the five new Golden Gate scenes may cover it, and they cannot break.
- Can you wait a fortnight? Wallpaper apps sit at an unusually deep level of the system, so they are among the first things a major macOS release disturbs and among the first to get patched. Upgrading a couple of weeks late costs nothing.
Where Tayu sits
Tayu is on the second route: it draws its own window at the desktop layer and plays a 4K scene or a YouTube link there, with matching ambient sound, scheduled scenes and Flow. It does not install anything into Apple's wallpaper system and it does not do lock-screen video, which is why the macOS 27 install change is not the thing to watch for it. It requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon.
